I imagine if there was a soundtrack to new stars being formed, it would be a Sigur Rós set. Sigur Rós is the classical music of our century, where imagination and feelings flow freely and music doesn’t enter your body through your ears but rather through your soul. The Icelandic trio’s show at the Hollywood Bowl this past Saturday was as much a spiritual adventure as it was a musical experience. The etherial sound of the bowed guitar interlaced with the angelic voice of Jónsi holding notes for what seemed like an eternity instilled such awe and stillness in the crowd you could have heard a pin drop in this outdoor arena of 17,500 seats. It was a thing of true art and beauty.
The show was divided into two sets and lasted for approximately two hours with one short intermission half way through. Sigur Rós started out soft and sweet for the first half with sexy base lines and cosmic backdrops that made you feel like you were submerged in the symphony of a nebula. The second half of the set was somewhat more rock ‘n roll, where bright lights flashed in sync with heavy drum beats. And although the band had no new album to promote, they started their second set with Óveður, their first new song in three years. You can watch the video to Óveður here.
