Allah-Las’ new album Calico Review is out now on Mexican Summer. The band once again surprises with summery tunes that are sure to warm your heart even in the cool fall and winter days ahead. But what makes their new record extra special? It was recorded in Los Angeles’ historic Valentine Recording Studio, a legendary spot where bands like the Beach Boys once recorded, but which had lain dormant since 1979. Allah-Las were one of the lucky first bands to use its refurbished equipment.
The Los Angeles-based quartet was formed in 2008 while three of the members were working at the Amoeba Music record store, spending a lot of time listening to music, and building a repertoire of what works for them. The style of band that emerged was somewhere between garage rock, funk and psychedelic vintage rock. Passionate but melancholic at times, California dreaming became the very essence of their music.
For Calico Review, Allah-Las experimented with new instrumentation, evolving their sound even further. I promise, there isn’t a more perfect soundtrack for a sunny day at the beach or a ride in a convertible along the coast of Southern California. Their music exudes vacation vibes and freedom.
