Experience Childhood Again With Sarah Jaffe at The Open Chord

From Texas to New York, Sarah Jaffe has certainly begun to make a name for herself.

Her music is featured on an award winning independent film Never Goin’ Back, she cowrote and sang on a Grammy award winning track for Eminem, her vocals can be heard in Disney/Pixars short, The Blue Umbrella, and she has performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

Jaffe credits her parents for exposing her to musicians like James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and Anita Baker at a young age and that’s where it started, according to the rising artist. “My parents’ appreciation and love for music was how I found inner peace before I could get my hands on an instrument,” Jaffe says.

Growing up in a rural environment with a large imagination offered Jaffe the chance to explore, discover herself and understand the world. Her first instrument was the guitar. “My parents nurtured my love for music, and it turned into something,” she says.

When it comes to her songwriting process, Jaffe taps into that childhood and is influenced by the time of day along with her running thoughts. “I have always maintained that earnest sense of sitting down with the guitar and coming at it from a singer-songwriter-in-my-bedroom-feel,” she says, “There’s a certain kind of magic that happens when everyone’s asleep. I dive into that world late at night, and I can remember doing that when I was younger. I always valued that time I had when it was just me in my room,” Jaffe explains.

The songs don’t come out of mid-air, however. Jaffe is constantly tapping into her imagination for new ideas to incorporate into her music, “I start with the basics. Sometimes it comes if I am sitting down with a guitar, or it comes from a lyric, or an idea for a song title, and it will loop around in my head until it falls into whatever I am working on,” she adds. “Making music is similar now to when I was a child. It is a delicate balance between knowing what I am doing technically, versus the feel of what I am doing.”

Jaffe is currently promoting her EP The Championship, featuring new singles, “Championship” and “Frances McDormand, Catherine O’Hara.” Influenced by other electronic music and musicians, and inspired by Kacey Musgraves’ new album, Jaffe has begun to pursue the more technical side of creating music experimenting with and learning more about production. “Producing is something I would love to eventually do as the long game career,” Jaffe says. She aims to produce and release a full-length album in 2022.

Jaffe is now touring with TORRES. Together they will be hitting up venues in Atlanta, New York, D.C., Asheville, and will be playing at The Open Chord on October 15th in Knoxville, TN. “I am really excited about sharing my new songs and getting back out with Torres, she is fabulous” Jaffe concludes.
