Bring Some Records, Play Some Records, Nerd Out: The Vinyl Club

Guests at The Vinyl Club Episode 12The Vinyl Club is a monthly event, which takes place at Wilburn Street Tavern by McFerrin Park in East Nashville. Started by Nekos Barnes one year ago, vinyl lovers are encouraged to bring records, play records, sell records or simply nerd out to records. Anyone can sign up for a 15-minute set, as long as you bring and play vinyl. Just be sure to get there early and in person in order to get your name on the list because it fills up fast. All music styles are welcome. So don’t be surprised if you’re bouncing around to some old school hip-hop just to find yourself questioning existentialism during the subsequent 15 minutes of angry screaming. But that’s just the beauty of it – it’s the most musically diverse night you’ll currently find in Nashville.

While Barnes’ intention is to keep the event small, manageable and fun, it’s already growing substantially in popularity month by month. Part of the charm is the venue itself – a small smoky dive-bar, owned and run by the sweet Miss Paulette, who will greet you and introduce herself with a smile as you walk through the doors – that is, once you ring the door bell and are granted entry. While the place is cash-only and solely sells beer, it’s some of the cheapest cold beer you’ll find around town. And if you’re not in a drinking or dancing mood, you can always play a game of pool or darts.

The next Vinyl Club is scheduled to take place on Thursday February 12, 2015. I’d encourage you to check it out before it gets too overrun by people. You’ll feel like you’re going to someone’s private house party. It is one of the most fun nights you’ll have all month and more importantly: it’s free! Trust me, it won’t be long before the cool kids around town get wind of it and it becomes the next Boom Bap: so crowded that you won’t be able to move ten steps past the door.
