Who, you ask, stole Day 3 of Shaky Knees Festival? The Head and the Heart did.
The Sun was setting behind the Atlanta skyline. I didn’t check the weather on my phone, but whatever your idea of perfect weather is—it was that. Shame on us, because we had absolutely no idea how good The Head and the Heart would be live. The words will move you. The notes will surround you. The Head will make you reevaluate your life, and The Heart will make you forget about all of it. The entire band are rockstars, but Josiah Johnson feels like a superstar in the making. A young Bob Dylan. In a life where time is limited, seeing The Head and The Heart is a damn good way to spend it.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Chalk this one up as a pleasant surprise. Bands like Unknown Mortal Orchestra are the reason we get so mad when we hear people say they aren’t going to attend festivals because the lineup is “weak this year.” Silly. Unknown Mortal Orchestra has won several awards in New Zealand such as Best Alternative Album (for their newest album “Multi-Love”), but it is high-time they start getting some recognition over here in the States. Stop letting other countries hog all of the good music. You can start by appreciating Unknown Mortal Orchestra.
St. Paul and The Broken Bones
Every single time that we catch a set by this band, the crowd has grown exponentially. Sunday afternoon at 4:15 was no exception. The day was much more temperate than the last two and the lawn was covered in blankets and a sea of people, lazily watching these young masters perfectly present their masterpiece. The set offered many of their most loved songs and a few from their forthcoming album. Check out a fan shot video of their Beatles cover of “I Want You (She’s So Heavy) below.
Explosions In The Sky
But didn’t you have them on your list yesterday? Yes we did and will have them on every list, every time the step onto a stage. EITS has not toured for many years and this is our second and last time watching them, for what we hope will be a much shorter hiatus from the road. The sunset show on Sunday has the crowd smiling and swaying to the melodic builds into crashing orchestral delight. Check out a fan shot video of “The Only Moment We Were Alone” below.
