SHOW REVIEW: Cut Copy @ Marathon Music Works

The Australian band Cut Copy opened their 2014 tour at Marathon Music Works on March 19. Lead singer Dan Whitford started the band as a solo project back in 2001. It has since then evolved into a powerful four-piece. Their latest album Free Your Mind was released in late 2013. Their sound, sort of an interesting blend of indie pop, synth pop, dance and punk, oddly enough resulted in a resemblance of David Bowie meets the Beach Boys at times. The show was simple, with an emphasis on the musicians rather than an elaborate backdrop or stage set. But when you have a group of such high energy musicians, you don’t really need anything else to deliver a great show.

I’m sure the girls don’t necessarily follow these guys around for their wardrobe style. But despite a somewhat nerdy appearance, their incredible talent captivated many fascinated fans. And who doesn’t love a rebel – especially nowadays that the hipsters have basically taken over entirely. And ladies, another bonus (if you want to check them out online): the music video for the title song “Free Your Mind” stars the beloved True Blood actor Alexander Skarsgård.
