On October 8th, the English indie rock band Arctic Monkeys graced Nashville with an outstanding performance at Marathon Music Works. The band was formed in 2002 and has released five studio albums since 2006 – all of which reached No. 1 in the album charts right away. No wonder the show sold out. Maybe the band has managed to stay so successful, because they have evolved their sound with each album. Their latest album, AM, which was released in September 2013, is definitely a little bit of punk a lot of rock ‘n roll.

Lead singer Alex Turner chopped his long hair off to embrace a 50’s look – think John Travolta in Grease. He may be a small guy, but his voice makes up for it and he sure knows how to get a crowd revved up.

Arctic Monkeys played almost all of the songs off their new album, opening the show with “Do I Wanna Know?” and finishing with “R U Mine,” which was fist released well over a year ago. “Tonight we’re yours, Nashville. But the question is: Are you mine?” Turner shouted at the crowd.

They also covered a good number of old hit songs, including “Brianstorm,” “Crying Lightning” and their very first single “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor,” which became an instant No. 1 hit song once released in 2005 and put this killer band on the map right away.

They also played a personal favorite, “Snap out of it,” which I highly recommend to anybody going through a break-up. “Forever isn’t for everyone – is forever for you? It sounds like settling down, or giving up. But it don’t sound much like you, girl,” Turner says. You can see how the fast beat, fun tune and snippy lyrics will help you snap out of it in no time.
