While many questions remain as we enter March for the men’s basketball team on Rocky Top, one thing is certain: Tennessee’s squad is thicker than ever.
When we originally started tossing around this idea a month ago, I was pretty firm about my starting five. Since then, it has changed three or four times.
Tennessee’s depth is a strong point but at times, it has created a lack of chemistry for a team with very few returning players from one year ago. Having won nine of its last 11 contests, UT seems to be hitting its stride a little later in the year than in previous seasons an that has been a formula for success for champions in recent years.
As of now, just after the United States took home Olympic gold in Men’s Hockey and a day after the Vols earned a huge road win against Vanderbilt in Nashville, I’m going with a three guard lineup and moving Ament to the four, with DeWayne Brown II playing big in place of J.P. Estrella. Dictating what opposing teams have to match up with is a huge strength for UT and with this depth, that mentality could be the difference in the NCAA Tournament against teams unfamiliar with the Vols. When Estrella returns, I like both he and Felix Okpara coming off the bench at the first timeout with Estrella taking Evans’ spot and Okpara going in for Brown II. Ament would then move to the three position.
Here’s what I’ve got. What would you change? Fill yours out below and check back after the regular season to see the results.
G – Ja’kobi Gillespie
G- Bishop Boswell
G – Amari Evans
F – Nate Ament
F – DeWayne Brown II
