When Poliça played at Mercy Lounge in Nashville on November 11th, I did not know what to expect. This was the third time that the synth-pop band consisting of lead singer Channy Leaneagh, bass player Chris Bierden and the two drummers Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson played in Nashville. I must admit, the performance was such an unexpected surprise that I could just stand there and watch in awe for the first half of the set, completely forgetting to move my body as I was taking in the dreamy dance tunes and Leaneagh’s beautiful energy.
Leaneagh has evolved from a shy artist, who barely looked up at the crowd during her first Nashville appearance, to a confident woman mesmerizing the audience with her incredibly beautiful voice. For such a petite person, the woman sure has some serious pipes.
When handed a real rose from a member in the audience, Leaneagh took a moment to praise and thank Nashville. “Nashville has class,” she said. She joked about not being able to get into most places because they mainly just wear jeans and hoodies, and gave props to East Nashville, where they apparently stopped for some pizza earlier in the day.
Poliça came back with an encore performance covering Lesley Gore’s song “You Don’t Own Me,” which left the audience in a perfect mood of pride and joy. Poliça’s latest album Shulamith was released in October of this year, and if you haven’t listened to it yet then I highly recommend you go do so right now.
