SHOW REVIEW: moe. @ Marathon Music Works

I remember Knoxville days when everyone had a moe. bumper sticker on their car. Those same people could be found at Marathon Music Works in Nashville on January 31st, 2014. I found myself surrounded by hoodies and knitted hats. Girls were waltzing through the masses. And you couldn’t miss the unmistakable classic hippie head nod and shoulder bounce. Within minutes I realized that I was way too sober for this show.

The mix of dilated pupils, headbands and friendly hugs from strangers confirmed that this is without a doubt hippies’ paradise. Moe. The classic jam band, often found at festivals. Like soccer for hippies, the room was filled with sounds of cheers, hollers and whistles. The dancing bright lights resembling stars and sunrays made me wish I had brought a pair of sunglasses.

But you’ve got to give the hippies one thing: They’re very respectful of your individual dancing space. All the way to the front of the stage everyone was dancing and nobody was shoving others around. Quite the contrary: people would step aside, asking if you wanted to get closer to the stage for a better view.

moe. played two entire sets that night. Similar to a Phish or Widespread Panic show, the positivity was so contagious that you couldn’t help but leave in a good mood. I’ve really got to give it up to you peace-, love- and wheatgrass-lovers.
