Lost Classics: Concert compilation album captures guitarist Jimi Hendrix at his best

Guitar virtuoso’s best work highlighted on The Jimi Hendrix Concerts

Throughout his brief career, rock and blues guitar virtuoso Jimi Hendrix played some classic live shows and composed some of the best music of the psychedelic era.

But much of Hendrix’s best work went unreleased until after his death in 1970. Some have been pulled from music store shelves as the legendary ax man’s family and estate have had battles with his record company.

Some have returned but some may be lost — at least for a while.

One such album is 1982’s The Jimi Hendrix Concerts, a compilation of some of the artist’s best live tracks that were recorded with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, featuring Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums.

Band of Gypsys bassist Billy Cox, Hendrix’s military buddy, appears on the album on “Red House” and “Hey Joe,” which were both captured at a 1970 show at the New York Pop Festival in Randall’s Island, NY and a show in Berkeley in Northern California, respectively.

Most of the material on the live album, which contains work from shows between 1968-70, has been released on other live LP’s, including Live at Winterland.

Tracks from the Winterland show in San Francisco include: “Fire,” “Wild Thing,” “Hear My Train A Comin’ (Gettin’ My Heart Back Together Again),” “Little Wing” and “Voodoo Child (Slight Return).”

One track from a 1969 show in San Diego, “I Don’t Live Today,” is one of the final live recordings from the original ‘Experience’ lineup.

A previously unreleased version of “Foxey Lady,” from the LA Forum Concert in 1969, also appears on the album.

The LP also includes renditions of “Stone Free” and “Bleeding Heart (Blues in C Sharp)” from the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The LP, though hard to find, is a must have for Hendrix fans as it features some of Jimi’s best jams and some of his best performances.
