Is that dude playing a Flying V and wearing a cape?
When you first encounter the feather hat, red cape, sunglasses and white custom-made designer suit decorated with rhinestones, skulls and crossbones you know this is something you haven’t seen in Nashville yet.
Southern rock galore, Leroy Powell and the Messengers opened their Friday night show at 3rd and Lindsley with their crowd-favorite “Cannonball.” After rocking everyone’s socks off with this high-energy intro packed with solid guitar riffs, the band followed up with their slow-jam “Tumblin’ Down.” Powell also introduced a new song called “King Kong” – a tribute to East Nashville, he says, where anything could happen – even King Kong could move in next door and become your best friend.
Leroy Powell, former guitar player and co-writer for Shooter Jennings decided to focus on his own venture, resulting in clever songwriting and an experience you can’t find in Nashville every day. His songs tells stories of making deals with the devil, angels crying, and running from girls trying to tie the knot. A basic summary of the traditional rock star life, you might say.
