KNOXVILLE’S WILLIAM WRIGHT NAMED BEST COMPOSER FOR THE SCREEN AT SCREEN MUSIC PROGRAM 2021

Wright’s rescore of The Swim Lesson from Moonlight selected from talented field

PAVIA, ITALY – Knoxville composer William Wright was honored Sunday, July 31st as the Best Composer for the Screen and winner of the Screen Music Program 2021 for his rescore of the “swimming lesson” scene from the film Moonlight. A slate of top composers participated by creating their own rescore to various pieces of media, including the now iconic scene from the film Moonlight from director Barry Jenkins, for the 2021 edition of this venue for emerging composers in the film, tv and video game industry.
The event, traditionally held in-person near Milan, Italy was instead this year held in a rich virtual format due to international travel limitations. Wright’s prize includes a return to Milan’s Screen Music Program in 2022.
The event consisted of a 10-day series of masterclasses, lessons and workshops focused on composition and the fundamentals of scoring for the screen. Wright and his fellow composers composed material for the event which was recorded by Milan’s mdi ensemble.
Participants also had the opportunity to present their work and receive feedback from a panel of award-winning faculty composers including Alison Plante, Clint Bajakian and Paulo Tortiglione.
Wright as a composer has provided the score to film and video productions through his private Knoxville studio as well as his work with boutique audio and communications house Pitchwire. He also serves as the  content creator for East Tennessee addiction treatment organization Cornerstone of Recovery. His internationally acclaimed composition Salt Mass: A Hookland Suite was released in 2018 by Gezellig Records.
As a performer, Wright has collaborated with musicians across a range of styles from his years of chamber pop touring with composer Daniel Hart (recently known for scoring David Lowry’s The Green Knight) to electronic dance and outré pop with his long running projects Senryu and Peak Physique. Most recently, Wright was called-in to serve as a multi-instrumentalist on 2021 tour dates by EmiSunshine and the Rain.
The Scruffy City Orchestra will be premiering William Wright’s newest orchestral work, A Kingdom Where Nobody Dies, in November at Knoxville’s Sacred Heart Cathedral. Rehearsals begin August 5th.
