Only Getting Better With Time – An Interview and Show Review of Emarosa By Ethan Murrell

Emarosa

“I had placenta sprayed on me last night.” Wait, what? “We were chanting around a zombie woman giving birth, and then her dead baby came out and sprayed placenta all over us.” Well alright then.

No, this is not an interview with Rick Grimes. The zombie child was a part of a haunted house so don’t worry, ebola isn’t coming to get you…well it might be, but that won’t have anything to do with Emarosa. The only thing Emarosa is spreading is good music and a good time. This may be a little bit of a unique article. Yes, it contains an interview with the band, but it also is going to discuss their Charlotte show on October 29, and the band’s general awesomeness. Let’s start with the Charlotte show.

I think we could all agree that life isn’t fair. When we were young it was because Mom wouldn’t let us get the Hershey bar at check out line #6. I mean halloween was like, a whole week ago. A few years later it was because Dad wouldn’t cough up the keys to the damn truck, and they just don’t understand us. Now? You got passed up for the promotion, I should have been starting quarterback at my high school, and the world, it’s just a messed up place.

That’s the best explanation that I could come up with as to why Emarosa was opening for Memphis May Fire and Yellowcard. The world is just a messed up place. Hang in there though Emarosa. Your time will come and you are going to far outshine those bands you are playing with now.

I understand that we all have to pay our dues and put in the work and blah blah blah, but Emarosa was the best band that I saw in Charlotte, and it’s time for the world to take notice. Bradley Walden is nothing short of one of the best singers alive. Don’t let the hard core style or the kick ass guitar riffs distract you, Bradley Walden has some serious pipes. This band jams, perhaps harder, and better than ever before. When I asked them how it’s been different working on this album compared to previous ones Bradley said, “It was written as a band…This was just more organic, more cohesive”. He said that it wasn’t a band writing bits and pieces, but a band “writing songs”. I went on to ask the members what their respective roles were in the song writing process and they all paused to think for a moment and collectively said, “It’s a collective effort.” I couldn’t help but chuckle.

Part of the reason that we are rooting for these guys is because we could sense the sincerity between the band and with us. None of them wanted to accept praise and they all wanted to take the blame for their mistakes. They are a selfless group for sure. We asked the band to recall the first time they played live together. “F#*king horrible” was the consensus response that we got. Bradley went on to elaborate, “Man the first show, I botched it pretty bad”, but no sooner had Bradley finished that thought before Jordan Stewart, (keys) swooped in to the rescue. “I think it’s safe to say that we were all pretty rough, it wasn’t just on [Bradley]”.

They are a tight knit group, partly because they’ve had time to bond over the last year. While they have been on the road, they’ve been on a lot of adventures, one of which was last night. If an officer were to ask them what they where they were on the night of October 28th, they would have an alibi. They were all singing and dancing around a zombie woman giving birth to a zombie baby. I would tell him that I was studying for a history exam. Why don’t interesting things happen to me?

It’s 3:30AM and I have two exams in the morning so I really need to sleep (Don’t tell Mom). But before I wrap up, I have to make sure you understand this: Emarosa is a fascinating, humble, and badass up and coming band, and you should catch them before it’s too late. Before  long, stadiums will be sold out and you’ll be kicking yourself, thinking back to this article. You’re going to say, “Why didn’t I just take Blank’s word for it? Why didn’t I just go give them a shot?” Don’t be that guy (or girl). Don’t miss out.
