Barley’s St. Patrick’s Day 5k and Fun run returns to old city

Carrie On events production honors former employee, raises money for good cause

When Barley’s employee Carrie Daughtery passed away in 2008, she was involved with Emily’s Power for a Cure, a foundation devoted to raising funds and awareness for neuroblastoma research. To honor her memory, her friends and the Barley’s family started Carrie On Events, a nonprofit that donates 100 percent of its fundraising efforts to Emily’s Power for the Cure.

Daughtery loved costumes, dressing up and good times, and Carrie On Events strives to create fun occasions that serve good causes. One of the nonprofit’s premier events is the Barley’s St. Patrick’s Day 5k and Fun Run, which it will be presenting for the 11th time on Sunday, March 17. Beginning this year, the organization, which includes Bryan Campbell, Danielle Evans Campbell, Casey Cordy, Rachel Wright, Daima Hines and Erin Morrison, will also promote a Halloween race set for October 27. As Hines says, “We do this for the fun, and I am just always impressed by the smiles our events put on hundreds of faces.”

Beginning at 2 p.m., the Fun Run is a .8-mile race for kids that starts at Barley’s and heads to the Gay Street Viaduct before looping back. The main event, the 5k, will begin soon after at 2:30. Most participants will be wearing costumes or St. Paddy’s swag, as winners will be selected for a costume contest and a Spirit of Carrie award. Between 700 and 1,100 participants are expected this year, with the first 850 registrants receiving a commemorative medallion. Everyone who enters will receive a T-shirt, all-you-can-eat pizza, two free drinks, a swag bag from the sponsors and photo downloads from the race.

Entry fees are $35 for the Fun Run and $50 for the 5k. Ainsley’s Angels will be on hand to assist disabled or wheelchair-bound participants. The Barley’s parking lot will be closed and filled with event tents from the more than 20 sponsors. DJ Sammy Scott will be providing entertainment. Please note that the race overlaps with the Old City Pub Crawl, so parking may be tight. Participants may pick up their entry packets at Barley’s on Friday, March 15 from 12-5 p.m. or after the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday from 2-7 p.m. There are prizes for early pickup. On race day, packet pickup will open at noon.
