It had been three years since I last saw Kitten perform. Similar to meeting a friend you hadn’t seen in a long time, you wonder how your reunion will go. Have they changed? Have they grown? Are they still equally crazy? Has life been kind to them?
Yes, life has been kind: this indie rock band, which formed back in 2009, is now headlining shows on a Saturday night in the heart of Hollywood. And lead singer Chloe Chaidez has grown for sure. The once crazy 18-year old I saw climbing speakers, sliding down poles and rocking her hair like a windmill has mellowed out from a roaring wild cat to a purring kitten.
Saturday’s set at the Fonda Theater in Hollywood started out with a nice sax intro. The band has morphed into a weird mix of hot dudes and gals with very different styles. You had Magic Mike on the drums and some 90’s grunge-looking guy off to the right side playing the tambourine (I’m guessing boyfriend?), while a very androgynous-looking lady dressed like a yogi was singing back-up on the left. Quite the entertaining visual overall.
Lead singer Chloe Chaidez gave LA her best vogue appearance. I was a little disappointed that she didn’t fully let loose again. At best, she climbed into the crowd and stood on her fans’ hands during the song “G#.” But same as ever, she impressed with her talented voice, hitting those high notes like a trained opera singer.
Overall, maybe not as rarrrr but still very meow.
