When Interpol announced their hiatus in 2011, many hearts were broken in fear that the post-punk geniuses would be no longer. Needless to say, when El Pintor was released earlier this year and the band announced their U.S. tour, excitement went through the roof.
Interpol’s new record is yet another work of perfection, so I was happy to see that the band played many of their new songs during their show at Marathon Music Works on November 11. Most of the fans seemed just as familiar with the new material as with their old classics and sang along from beginning to end. It may have seemed like Interpol already played a beautifully perfect set by the time they left the stage, but when they played both “NYC” and “PDA” off their first album Turn On the Bright Lights for their encore, they put the icing on the cake.
Hundred Waters opened the show for Interpol. Their rather experimental sound, which reminded of a strange mix between Portishead and Björk, may have only appealed to a select group that night, but it added an interesting element and musical experience many had not anticipated. At times, lead singer Nicole Miglis found herself almost whispering songs into her microphone, yet you could hear a pin drop in the audience as she had everyone’s full attention with her bashful innocence paired with esoteric tunes. It was like watching performance art: You will always have some snubbing their noses at it, while others take it in with admiration and delight. Hundred Waters just announced their first U.S. headlining tour last week. So if you want to discover the odd, look them up.
